Surface Area-to-Volume Ratio, not Cellular Viscoelasticity is the Major Determinant of Red Blood Cell Traversal through Small Channels

چکیده
The remarkable deformability of red blood cells (RBCs) depends on the viscoelasticity plasma membrane and cell contents surface area to volume (SA:V) ratio; however, it remains unclear which these factors is key determinant for passage through small capillaries. We used a microfluidic device examine traversal normal, stiffened, swollen, parasitised immature RBCs1. show that dramatic stiffening RBCs had no measurable effect their ability traverse channels.

Viscoelasticity of the human red blood cell.
We report here the first measurements of the complex modulus of the isolated red blood cell (RBC). Because the RBC is often larger than capillary diameter, important determinants of microcirculatory function are RBC deformability and its changes with pathologies, such as sickle cell disease and malaria. A functionalized ferrimagnetic microbead was attached to the membrane of healthy RBC and the...

متن کاملThe important of surface area/volume ratio to the rate of oxygen uptake by red cells
Dear Sir: Holland and Forster (1966) demonstrated experimentally that velocity constants for initial rates of oxygen uptake by fully reduced erythrocytes (k~) are inversely related to mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (Table I). They based k" upon measurements of the rate of hemoglobin saturation with oxygen, so that the entire process included oxygen diffusion through the cell membrane, diffusion ...
متن کاملEffects of Surface Viscoelasticity on Cellular Responses of Endothelial Cells
Background: One area of nanoscience deals with nanoscopic interactions between nanostructured materials and biological systems. To elucidate the effects of the substrate surface morphology and viscoelasticity on cell proliferation, fractal analysis was performed on endothelial cells cultured on nanocomposite samples based on silicone rubber (SR) and various concentrations of organomodified nano...
متن کاملRheologic properties of senescent erythrocytes: loss of surface area and volume with red blood cell age.
The rheologic properties of senescent erythrocytes have been examined using two models of red blood cell (RBC) aging. In the rabbit, aged erythrocytes were isolated after biotinylation, in vivo aging, and subsequent recovery on an avidin support. Aged RBCs from the mouse were obtained using the Ganzoni hypertransfusion model that suppresses erythropoiesis for prolonged periods of time allowing ...
